The Funniest Thing that Happen to me as a Sports Massage Therapist

One Sunday morning, I was stood on the sidelines, watching a friendly football match, when one of the players - a friend of mine - collapsed with an intense cramp in his calf. He crawled off the pitch, wincing in pain, and my instincts kicked in. I rushed over, lifted his leg, and began stretching and massaging his cramped muscle.

Just as I got into it, one of his teammates barrelled over and nudged me out of the way. “I’ve got this,” he said, claiming I “didn’t know what I was doing.” I held back a laugh as he began what can only be described as an overly enthusiastic attempt at “stretching” my friends leg.

I let the guy work his magic for a good five minutes as he twisted and pulled on my friends leg. Eventually he gave up and I stepped back in. Within two minutes, I had my friend’s calf relaxed and back to normal, and he was up on his feet, ready to finish the game.

The teammate sheepishly came over and admitted he may have underestimated me, and we all had a good laugh about it. From that day on, I became their go to person for situations like this - no more interruptions, just grateful players who were more than happy to let me work my magic.

As a female sports massage therapist, I often encounter patients who, at first, underestimate my strength and abilities. There is this common misconception that because I am not the biggest person in the room, I might not be able to deliver the kind of deep tissue work they are looking for. It is always interesting and amusing to see their reactions when they realise just how effective my pressure can be.

At first, some patients approach with a bit of skepticism, but by the end of the session, they are often amazed at how much relief I’ve been able to provide. I've had several people tell me that they were surprised by how strong and intuitive my touch was, and it always feels good to break down those initial misconceptions.
